Alberta tar sands

A fragmented overview

I'd heard about the tar sands, the 500 dead ducks in the toxic sludge of one of the containment lakes. I'd heard about the 'black gold rush' and the strange bile duct cancers in Fort Chipewyan...

so I was curious.

The first thing I found was a new northern desert: man-made, toxic, barren:

Alberta's boreal desert.

In a hurry? A dozen pictures for a quick taste and smell of the tar sands.
Was there a logic of war everywhere? Or was it just me?
People, but not the ones in most magazines.
Is there any hope for the environment in the largest industrial project in human history?
The tar sands exist because of their proximity to water. How convenient.
